STELAE

ancient civilizations world over, from egypt and babylonia to tibet and the mayans, created stelae—carved standing slabs, often in stone—as monuments and memorials of important events in their lives. stelae were also made as votives—objects exchanged for healing or the fulfillment of wishes.

so their gods would hear their prayers, ancient egyptians carved ears into their stelae. this spiritual and artistic practice coincided with the rise of personal devotion in the new kingdom, symbolizing a direct and intuitive line of communication between man and the divine. mayans too understood the stelae they created to possess a soul-like quality and were seen as living objects.

STELAE is a series of votive objects commemorating our desires and healing. taking the form of eared tables and tabletop items, STELAE are monuments for the home meant to encourage the intuitive line of communication we have with our own personal deities: god, nature, community, ourselves. by imbuing spirit and intention into our daily objects, these pieces become expressive canvases that guide our highest-self ambitions.
